SHAWN BERGER’S HOT BUTTERED JUSTICE
Yes, I have randomly decided to theme this cocktail to our episode
This is a Hot Buttered Rum from page #60 of Jigger, Beaker, and Glass. I quality tested this cocktail a few times because I found the way it was described in the original text, it was very one-note. I was basically just getting rum. Mainly they used whole cloves and added the butter at the end with no muddling. I find this method creates a much more complex, blended experience. You’re welcome. I did that testing for YOU. This recipe sounds complex but it really isn’t. And you can mix and match and play with any seasonal aromatics you like.
· 1 ½ tsp brown sugar
· 1 twist lemon peel
· 1 ½ tsp lemon juice
· ½ tsp ground cloves
· ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
· 2 tsp butter
· 1 oz. (30 ml) dark rum (Gosling’s Black Seal)
· 1 oz. (30 ml) aged rum (Cruzan Aged Rum)
· 3 oz. (90 ml) very hot water (I used an electric kettle; you don’t want it actually boiling)
· 1 cinnamon stick
o Muddle brown sugar, lemon peel, lemon juice, cloves, nutmeg, and butter in a heat-resistant glass
o Add rum
o Fill with hot water
o Stir with cinnamon stick
o Garnish with more ground nutmeg to taste
· From the book: “When getting really fancy…Pete may float a spoon of rum on top, and set aflame, but not for anyone less than a full Commodore!”
