Today’s drink comes to us from another book I have, this one is, “The Drunken Botanist,” by Amy Stewart – subtitle, “The plants that create the world’s greatest drinks.”
It’s basically about the botanicals that go into our liquors and cocktails, and she has a cocktail for most of the plants she talks about.
THE BISON GRASS COCKTAIL
Bison grass is an herb native to North America and Eurasia, and it’s sacred to the indigenous people of Canada and the United States. It’s used to make a specific type of Polish vodka, with a bison grass blade in each bottle. The liqueur is called, “zubrowka.” It’s the 3rd best-selling vodka in the world, behind Smirnoff and Absolut.
The drink we’re about to consume is known in Polish as, “Tatanka,” which…anyone remember what that word means? I’ll give you a hint, it’s a Lakota word. Yup, thanks Dances with Wolves, it is the Lakota word for the American bison.
· This cocktail is real simple
· Equal parts zubrowka and clear apple juice
· Shake with ice
· Strain into a cocktail glass
· I garnished this one with a few slices of Fuji apple
I chose to do a more traditional cocktail and leave out the vermouth for our episode, but I have tried this version and it is quite good.
