Since this is a very special episode, like that “Saved by the Bell” where Jessie Spano gets hooked on caffeine pills, I decided to do a 2-fer. We have two drinks today. The first of which I just wanted to do because it’s a classic 80s shot.
THE B-52
The origins of this shot are murky, but the leading claim is that it was created by Peter Fich, head bartender at the Banff Springs Hotel in Alberta, Canada in 1977. Fich named all of his drinks after bands, albums, and songs, and supposedly this shot is named after the B-52s, and not the Stratofortress bomber nor the hairstyle.
It is a layered shot, and when built correctly the different densities of the alcohol make the bottom third coffee liqueur (Kahlua), the middle is Irish cream (Bailey’s) and the top is Grand Marnier. You can also substitute triple sec or Cointreau. Pouring over the back of a bar spoon is the classic method of ensuring proper separation.
And because a shot is not much of a cocktail for our purposes here, I chose a drink The Educated Barfly recently featured on YouTube. Created by Erin Williams in 2008 at The Pegu Club in NYC, we have:
KILL DEVIL
· 2 oz. (60 m) Rhum Agricole Blanc
o You can sub here, though I would recommend using a rum that is distilled from sugar cane instead of molasses. I would bet you could even substitute cachaça, the Brazilian sugar cane alcohol.
· ½ oz. (15 ml) Green Chartreuse
· ¼ oz. (7.5 ml) Demerara syrup
· 3 dashes Angostura bitters
· A few drops of overproof rum, like Rum Fire
1. Combine the first four ingredients in a mixing glass and stir with ice.
2. Strain into a chilled coupe glass.
3. Garnish with a lime coin floating in the cocktail.
4. Drip Rum Fire onto the lime and light on fire.
