THE SOUTH SIDE COCKTAIL
The origins of this drink are nebulous, with one likely apocryphal story being that it was a beverage enjoyed by Al Capone, whose gang dominated the South Side of Chicago in the Prohibition era, hence, South Side Cocktail.
· 6-8 mint leaves
· 2 oz. (60 mL) gin
· 1 oz. (30 mL) lemon juice
· 1 oz. simple syrup
o Combine all ingredients in shaker and shake with ice
o Double strain into a chilled coupe glass
§ This removes the little bits of mint for a prettier drink presentation, though it isn’t strictly necessary
o Garnish with a mint leaf
· It’s basically a gin mojito, or a gin mint daiquiri
· You can also turn this into a South Side Fizz by straining the shaker contents over fresh ice into a Collins glass and filling with club soda
o If you take the mint out of the equation and half the simple syrup you’ve got a Tom Collins
o Bartending is fun
