In honor of a royal family no one cares about, I chose Queen Elizabeth II’s first drink of the day, one she has shortly before lunch.
THE DUBONNET COCKTAIL
· 1.5 oz. (45 ml) gin
· ¾ oz. (22 ml) Dubonnet Rouge
o Pour all ingredients into a mixing glass and stir with ice for 30 seconds
o Strain into a cocktail glass over fresh ice
o Garnish with a lemon twist
· Dubonnet Rouge is an aromatic wine-based aperitif originally created by Joseph Dubonnet in 1846 in a response to a competition put forth by the French government to find a way of making French Foreign Legionnaire colonizers drink quinine, which combats malaria, but is very bitter. The same way the British colonizers used gin and tonics to make quinine palatable.
· Also, I bought a bottle of this a while ago and I’m never going to use it, so here you go, fuckers.
· It’s very strange, and different, it hits you up-front with a punch of lemon from the twist, then an almost burnt taste of almonds or hazelnuts, though it gets milder and better as you go.
