The Dog Days of summer are actually over, running from July 3 - August 11th this year in the Northern Hemisphere. Historically this is the period following the heliacal rising of the star system Sirius, known as the “Dog Star,” Canis Majoris, 8.6 light years from Earth. It’s the brightest star in the night sky, and is part of a binary star system. Hellenistic astrology (323 BCE - 30 BCE)  connected the star with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, bad luck, and, oddly, the arousal of women

So even though the Dog Days are over, and presumably the libido of women all over the Northern Hemisphere is drying up for the season, I wanted to make a cocktail to celebrate the end of Summer. So today we’re enjoying:

THE DOG DAYS COCKTAIL

For this cocktail you will need:

½ oz. (15 ml) cherry liqueur

½ oz. sweet vermouth

½ oz. lemon juice

½ oz. bourbon

8 oz. beer

I recommend something wheat with citrus notes, like Sam Adams Summer Ale

Sometimes this is just built in the glass, but since it’s meant to be a refreshing cocktail on a hot day, I recommend combining all ingredients except the beer in a shaker and shake with ice. Strain into a highball or Collins glass over fresh ice and fill with beer.  Garnish with a lemon wedge.
