Our cocktail today is one I’ve wanted to do for quite some time, and a drink I really like. It is an official IBA cocktail (International Bartenders Association). I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned them before, but the IBA cocktail list was started in 1960, comprising the most requested cocktails. Currently there are 89 on the list. And this is one of them:
The Trinidad Sour
This cocktail is interesting because our base spirit is something normally used in very small amounts for flavoring – Angostura bitters. Ango is 45% alcohol, so it is kind of interesting you can just get it through the mail in huge amounts from Amazon. For our minor listeners out there.
· 1 ½ oz. (45 ml) Angostura bitters
· ½ oz. (15 ml) rye whiskey
· ¾ oz. (22 ml) lemon juice
· 1 oz. (30 ml) orgeat
1. Shake all ingredients with ice.
2. Double-strain into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass.
3. Garnish with a lemon twist.
This cocktail is actually pretty close to a formula cocktail, like the Last word, where it’s almost equal parts strong, herbaceous, sour, and sweet. It’s one that, at first blush you would think might be very unbalanced, because Ango is very loud. But it works so well.
