Looks like I (Ryan) was regurgitating the old chestnut of the adult film industry being the deciding factor with little basis. Here's a good explanation. The short version? VHS was much cheaper and you could record 2 hours versus 1 on Betamax. 

This movie is quite insane. And has a ton of awesome actors in it.
