THE WASHED UP LEGEND
· 2 oz. (60 ml) Naval strength gin
o 57% alcohol
o Plymouth is a good one
· 1 oz. (30 ml) lime juice
· 1 oz. crème de cassis
· 1 oz. raspberry liqueur
o Like Mr. Stacks or Chambord
· Plain sweet cider
Shake all ingredients except cider with ice. Strain over fresh ice in a tall glass. Top with cider. Unfortunately they used a local brand, but they said a good substitute is Excelsior Imperial Apple, which luckily the Brown Derby Wine Center carries. Depending on your cider, the cocktail may also benefit from a little simple syrup to taste, for a balance.
In case you’re curious, the reason 57% alcohol is “naval strength” is that the British navy stored both gunpowder barrels and gin barrel in the hold of the ship, and in case the gin leaked and got into the gunpowder, it would still burn with that proof alcohol, whereas it wouldn’t with anything weaker.
